‘When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.’

Become a Certified Kind Classroom with Wonder and Penguin Schools

This Anti-Bullying Week 2015 (16th-20th November), Penguin Schools is inviting you to take part in the Certified Kind Classroom Challenge.  Inspired by the internationally bestselling novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio, the challenge will encourage pupils to celebrate kindness in the lead up to and during Anti-Bullying Week.

Wonder is the story of August Pullman, a 10 year old boy with a severe facial difference. August has been home educated his whole life but is now starting mainstream school. During his first year at school August, his friends and family learn about friendship, kindness and acceptance.  Wonder is a beautiful story that inspires young readers to celebrate kindness. As part of the Certified Kind Classroom Challenge, schools must carry out as many kind deeds as possible in order to fill up a Jar of Kindness – the jar could be kept in a classroom, library or even a school hall.  For every kind deed that takes place, something is added to the jar.  You could use marbles, pencils, badges - it’s up to you. When the jar is full, your school is officially Certified Kind and you can email us to receive a special Certified Kind certificate and be entered into an exciting competition.

Send us a picture of your completed jar and a short description of how your school inspired pupils to choose kind (no more than 300 words) to penguinschools@penguinrandomhouse.co.uk by Friday 27th November at 6pm.  We’ll email you a certificate and enter you into a prize draw to win Wonder prizes.

The prizes are:

  • One school will be selected as the winner and will win a class set of Wonder and a class set of Auggie & Me by R.J. Palacio – the new collection of short Wonder stories.  The winner will also join the Wonder Champions – a group of schools and organisations who are our Wonder ambassadors.  Plus, the winning school will receive a special Wonder pack including posters, bookmarks and badges.
  • Two schools will each win five copies of Wonder and five copies of Auggie & Me and a Wonder poster.
